The Beginner’s Creative Ad

Hello, everyone. It is so good to be typing again especially when it is for the class that I am taking. These past two weeks, in my visual media class, also called COMM 130 at BYU-Idaho, we have been learning about Adobe Photoshop. Our assigned project was to create a creative ad based off of a project generator. The specifications that I got after clicking the project generator that my teacher had my class use were:

  • Toothpaste
  • Gender: Male and Female
  • Age: 25-34
  • Relationship: Married
  • Education: Masters or Doctorate
  • Income: $60,000-89,000
  • Media Consumption: Blog and Social Media

The goal was to hit as many as these specifications as possible within our creative ad. Leading up to create the creative ad using Photoshop, we were asked to remove three things and add three creative activities to our day for a week. Doing this assignment prepared me for the creative ad as it opened my creative side of the brain and the ideas for my creative ad came more readily.

I also sketched out my ideas that potentially met these specifications.

Even though I ended up not using any of these designs, it helped me figure out what I wanted to include.

When I was creating the ad, at first I was having a problem with masking images which in simpler terms also means melding and layering images together. After getting some help from my teacher, I felt more confident with using this tool. The two other things I had a challenging with was finding a logo image from the company that was large enough for me to remove the white backdrop from. The third thing was selecting the typography that enhanced the photo.

I decided to use a man with a fish head because it is meant to be symbolic and represent having a fish breath. The goal was to target females who have a significant other and think the significant needs to have a better breath as well as men who feeling conscious about their breath and want to change it for the better. The photo of a man that I selected to use also had meaning in it as well. It was supposed to represent a guy sitting outside his house because his wife refused to kiss him and he was already having a hard day. I selected the Tom’s of Maine Toothpaste company because the company tends to target individuals who will pay more and who also care about all natural things, which choosing a fish head felt fitting.

While creating this ad took time, it was also a lot of fun. I learned a lot while I was in the process and found that Photoshop is my favorite Adobe program so far. I am eager to learn more so that my designs will become even better. Have a great day or night wherever you may.
